COMPARISON OF METHODS
CARBON
The traditional media used in cleaning toxins from water is carbon. Carbon or "charcoal" is charred organic matter that has a tremendous ability to adsorb (draw) impurities to it, particularly organic chemicals such as pesticides and fertilizers, as well as the toxic chlorine added by almost every city water treatment plant to kill bacteria and algae.As great as it is, carbon is limited in what it can do. Granular carbon is not a "water purification" media. A water purifier is supposed to eliminate bacteria, and granular carbon does not do that. One common downfall of "carbon only" filters is that, being organic in make up, bacteria thrive and feed on the carbon and organic matter trapped in it. This makes it necessary to replace a carbon filter quite frequently.
Another problem with carbon is that chlorinated water, almost universally found in cities, saturates the carbon with chlorine. This also greatly reduces its useful life, as it becomes less and less capable of adsorbing organic chemicals and additional chlorine.
REVERSE OSMOSIS
Reverse Osmosis forces pure water through a membrane with the pressure from the water line. It is so fine that nearly all contaminants, including chemicals, dissolved solids, many of the minerals, and most microbes are screened out.
Although there is some concern about the minerals removed, foods and supplements are more dependable sources than water for nutritional minerals.
Reverse osmosis membranes, which are expensive, can be ruined by sediment, chlorine or bacteria. A sediment pre-filter and a carbon pre-filter for chlorine are commonly placed in advance of the membrane.
Reverse osmosis is a slow process. The purified water produced is usually collected in a holding tank with its own separate faucet for drawing the water as needed. The tank should be emptied weekly and freshly filled, as bacteria, mold and algae can develop in the tank.
It is important to maintain the RO unit with timely replacement of the pre-filter and the post-filter, and less frequently the RO membrane. A poorly maintained system can let mold, algae and other contaminants through, which can contribute to health problems.
RO water is generally more acid than is healthy for long term consumption. For best health, purified water for drinking should be more alkaline.We now have a remineralizing alkalizer unit for our counter top and under counter RO units and flow through fluoride removal units, which may be added to existing systems.
DISTILLATION
Distillation involves boiling water, then cooling and capturing the pure condensed steam. It is the most thorough water purification method, but there can be a problem of crossover of volatile chemicals, such as chlorine gas from chlorinated source water, into the distilled water collected. A carbon pre-filter or post-filter is often used to minimize this problem. Some units "double distill", giving a more pure water product yet.
Well-distilled water is thought of as "pure H2O". Nonetheless, it is also more acidifying drinking water should be. Also, distilled water tends to leach needed minerals out of the body.
CERAMIC
A ceramic filter is a microscopic screening agent, made from a fine clay material. It removes any particles as small as 1/2 micron in size. This includes bacteria and parasites, which no one wants to consume.Solid Carbon Block is a better choice today, as technology has reduced the pore size a micron or less. State of the art solid carbon block can be as fine as ceramic and offers the adsorption benefits of carbon as well.
REDOX OR KDF
The original redox media is known as "KDF", which stands for KINETIC DEGRADATION FLUXION. The full name relates to how it works, employing the principal of oxidation reduction. Redox is an unique media, an alloy of copper and zinc developed about 15 years ago. The movement of water through these dissimilar metals produces a minute temporary electrical charges that accomplish much.
Redox effectively destroys bacteria, most parasites and some viruses; it removes lead, iron, mercury and other heavy metals, and some fluoride; and it changes chlorine into harmless compounds.
REDOX & CARBON
Redox & carbon together make a great team. When redox media precedes carbon, taking care of bacteria and chlorine, this extends carbon's useful life and frees it to be more effective in removing organic compounds of concern such as pesticides and other petrochemicals.
ALUMINA
A compound called "Alumina" will almost completely remove fluoride from city water, as well as arsenic that may be present. Reverse osmosis is another way to remove fluoride.Alumina should be used in conjunction with redox media and carbon for more thorough cleaning of the water. Alumina also tends to make the water more acidic, so a remineralizing alkalizer is recommended with fluoride removal systems using alumina.
OTHER METHODS
Deionization removes ionically-charged dissolved solids using a resin which must periodically be renewed. Similarly, electrolysis draws ion-charged minerals to positive and negative poles. Neither is effective enough on bacteria.
Ultra-violet light applied to water destroys various microbes, as does ozone treatment of water.
These are all lesser used methods because other water purification processes achieve similar results more conveniently and economically.A water softener or a magnetic conditioner does not actually purify water or remove toxins.
COMBINATIONS
For more thorough water purification, a redox and carbon cartridge can be followed with a solid carbon block, which screens out particulate matter, including bacteria & parasites, down to a micron or less.
Redox and carbon can also be used as a pre-filter with Reverse Osmosis to prolong the life of the expensive RO membrane, and to produce better pure water for an extended time.
There is another good reason to use redox and carbon instead of or in conjunction with other methods. Redox and carbon are very economical.
Redox and carbon together are much longer-lasting than the usual carbon pre-filter, so a redox and carbon pre-filter would not need changed as often. The periodic replacement of a redox and carbon filter cartridge is less of an expense than replacing an RO membrane. The redox and carbon prolongs the life of the more expensive RO membrane.For fluoride in city water, we recommend a multi-stage fluoride removal cartridge with alumina, preceded by a solid carbon block and followed by a remineralizing alkalizer unit to counteract the acidity created by the alumina, OR a corrected reverse osmosis system.
NOTE: With the serious contamination of water supplies with pharmaceutical, industrial and agricultural chemicals, and radioactive fallout, a corrected reverse osmosis system is the best option to achieve safe pure water to consume.
A PROBLEM WITH WATER PURIFICATIONThe main problem with water purification is the extended use of a water purifier media beyond its thorough effectiveness. Any of the various media eventually wear out or get saturated or clogged with impurities. These need replaced depending on the amount of water that passes through them and the water quality.
Many people overlook timely replacement, and water quality can become worse than no water purifier when the media is getting exhausted.
Redox and carbon in combination maintain their effectiveness longer than reverse osmosis, deionizing resins or carbon alone. Redox in any water system reduces the likelihood of drinking contaminated water from failure to change cartridges in time.
CONCLUSIONIn any case, an effective method of water purification is needed to produce water that is healthy to drink, bathe or shower. Whether you have city water or well water, do not consume or routinely expose your skin to raw tap water.
